Ernesto Gismondi is a man behind the great success of the company Artemide. As an aerodynamic engineer by education, he is the creator and undisputed leader of the company, which he founded in Milan in 1959 with his friend, architect Sergio Mazza. The company was named after the goddess Artemis. In a post-war period, no importance was given to the design of lighting devices, everything was aimed at functionality. As Ernesto Gismondi recalls, they wanted to bring colors and variety to the dull post-war design. It was a tandem, where Ernesto took over production questions, and Sergio completely dedicated to design. They sought assistance from the best Milanese architects, and this truly revolutionary work gradually brought its results. The initial product catalog included 6 models only, but there were really remarkable lamps. For example, a spectacular model of a table lamp with a lampshade made of crystal glass and with a marble base (1959, Sergio Mazza) is still in great demand.
Today, the company Artemide is one of the most famous and titled lighting manufacturers. Its products have been repeatedly awarded by renowned international organizations (Compasso D'oro, Leonardo italian Quality, iF Product Design, Red Dot Design, Wall Paper Design). The Artemides lights are represented in many museums of contemporary art (MoMA - New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art - New York, Victoria and Albert Museum - London, Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnica - Milan, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna - Rome ).

Artemis the ancient Greek goddess of the moon is known as the patroness of all living things. But while the moon shines with reflected light, Artemide branded lamps are man-made light sources that are created in five factories of the manufacturer in Italy, France, Hungary and Canada. Artemide’s products are exported to 98 countries.
In the nineties, Artemide announced the creation of its new concept of Human Light, based on a rethinking of the meaning of light. At the heart of the creation of Artemide products is a human being and human needs. Proportions, functionality and technology in combination should create a product that most fully meets the needs of modern people, taking into account its way and rhythm of life. While other manufacturers of lighting equipment focused on creating "stylish" products, Artemide was thinking about how to bring more comfort to a person's life, while also taking into account such important aspects as environmental friendliness and energy saving. The company’s team proved that it is possible to produce modern lighting products with a beautiful design which does not have to correspond to any particular style. More important is that the lighting device helps a person (and other inhabitants of a particular space, including domestic animals and plants) acquire a new life level. The concept of Human Light also implies the provision of durability of products due to excellent quality. The company practices a modern approach to the assessment of the life cycle of products (Life Cycle Assessment).
In the lighting industry, the Human Light philosophy meant a new breakthrough, because it viewed light not only as a visual phenomenon, but also as a complex corpuscular-wave phenomenon with unlimited properties that affect health, mood, biological rhythm and human well-being. Artemide’s products are the result of serious scientific and technical research in various fields, including, among others, medicine, biology, physiology and anthropology. This is evidenced by numerous patents for inventions that accompany the development of the company's products, as well as by many international awards in the field of innovation.
Artemide’s lighting fixtures can be considered a phenomenon outside of time. The very first lamp of this manufacturer still remains a cult in the world of lighting design (Sergio Mazza, 1959). But, of course, today it is equipped with halogen bulbs. In 1972, Artemide produced a sensational table lamp Tizio (Richard Sapper), which went down in history of world design. This work lamp with a halogen light source takes up minimal space on the table, illuminates a well-defined work surface and maintains a balance thanks to an ideal counterweight system. Another bestseller Tolomeo was created in 1987 (Michele De Lucchi, Giancarlo Fassina).
The project Metamorfosi (Carlotta de Bevilacqua, 2000) is completely subordinate to the philosophy of "The Human Light". In the transparent case of the model Yang Metamorfosi (2000) there are three projectors with dichroic filters of red, green and blue colors. 6 plastic feet allow you to place the lamp at the desired angle. With the remote control you can control the mode and intensity of light.
The elegant "transparent" collection Cabildo (Eric Solè) with models reminiscent of soaring sculptures attracts attention. The model Boalum (Livio Castiglioni, Gianfranco Frattini) can serve as a floor, desktop, wall and even a "manual" lamp, if you like. The lamp consisting of several connecting flexible sections, assumes any shape.
The main Artemide's aesthetic idea can be described in few words: functional beauty in the service of modernity. Every year the company implements projects of talented modern designers, amazing, not at all similar, revealing new properties of light. More and more attention is given to the theme of "Internet of Things". Among the recent innovations, it is impossible not to mention the futuristic pendant lamp Ameluna that is a joint project with Mercedes-Benz, by using optoelectronic technologies. Hundreds of LEDs create a truly fantastic look. Control is carried out remotely through the smartphone application.
The progress of science is the main engine that provides Artemide with inexhaustible development opportunities. Notwithstanding the complexity of the applied technologies, the company's task remains always the same: People’s welfare, person's satisfaction in daily life.
