History of Moooi

The Dutch design company Moooi was started by acclaimed designers Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers in 2001. „Mooi“ meaning „pretty“ and „beautiful“ in Dutch, the additional „o“ in the company‘s name was put there as a stand-in for a promise of extra beauty. Given the company‘s devotion to novel design ideas and love of the exceptional, promoting young designers and never shying away from the risk of trying something which has never been done before, this promise is undoubtedly fulfilled. Taking an example from the fashion industry, Moooi has steadily cultivated an image of flamboyance and playfulness now having become associated with its brand, creating Highlight and furnishing designs that are enticing, fascinating and eye-catching, yet also easily adaptable to any living space in order to ensure their commercial success.

Since the company‘s launch, Moooi has had many internationally renowned designers join their team. Keen on discovering talent, Moooi has also helped many now famous designers to make their debut at the company, thus setting them on a path of success.

Today, Moooi is widely celebrated for its unique collections, which are introduced to the world at key locations such as Milan and London, and the Moooi brand has become synonymous with Dutch design.

Moooi: Passionate Designs for a Humane World

Moooi‘s philosophy is one of creating lighting and furnishings that incite passion and speak to the subjective, spiritual side of our nature – an often neglected aspect in our rationalized, modern world, which has also made its way into architecture and design, depriving them of a humane quality Moooi believes to be direly missing. To accomplish this, Moooi will often sift through classical designs and subject them to clever modifications, resulting in an evolved object which is also appealing due to the familiarity it still evokes, no matter how daring its shape and look might be. Moooi‘s intriguing spins on classical pieces manage to fuse the prized style elements of the past with the delight in novelty provided by innovatory achievements. In this way, Moooi has established itself as a trendsetter, regularly rattling up the world of design, as it happened in the case of its infamous Horse Lamp, which has attained iconic status.

Ever exquisite and playful, Moooi‘s product range includes both delicate objects along as well as ones that are truly eye-catching and highly expressive. And yet none of Moooi‘s even most flamboyant designs can be called clattered or vulgar, as the products created by this company are typically made with natural-looking materials such as wood, paper and glass, in mellow hues or with the use of classic colour shemes such as black and white. It is this ability to sense what is viable within commercial parameters and, at the same time, attractive by virtue of its originality and the creative spark reflected therein which has ensured the Dutch company‘s major international success. 

Moooi: Creative, Contemporary Collections with a Touch of the Classic

At select-interiormarket, we offer Moooi‘s collections of indoor lighting, among them pendants, chandeliers, floor lamps, table lamps and various types of LED lights such as wall lamps, floor lamps and pendants.

To highlight some of its most accomplished pieces, one can be directed to Moooi‘s Random Suspension Light by designer Bertjan Pot. Stylish, elegant and still minimalist in appearance, the intricately woven structure of its lamp shade is made out of glass fibres, which were dunked in epoxy resin and coiled around a large balloon. Since each glass fibre is laid out individually, no Random Suspension Light is like the other, which is how it got its name. Featuring a chrome-plated fixture and a small round hole for bulb exchange, this light is also available in an LED version and a colour choice among black or white.

Next, there is the wonderful Rabbit Lamp, a table lamp which was created by the Dutch Front Design team for Moooi. Included in a collection which also features the famous Horse Lamp and Moooi‘s Pig Table, its design was first introduced in 2006, enjoying great popularity ever since. The lamp is literally composed of a fibreglass rabbit sculpture true to the animal‘s actual dimensions, its ears being covered by a lamp shade made out of PVC viscose and a metal frame. Both freaky and romantic, this fairytale-inspired object makes for an extraordinary statement, while its dark colour gives it some restrainment at the same time, making this table lamp a fabulous choice to light up a cosy and stylish interior.
